Top of the Pops
Konica made a series of Pop cameras from 1982 and they came in a variety of colours. Black and red are the most common (and therefore cheap) versions, of what has become something of an eighties design classic.
The Pop is a simple automatic compact with a fairly decent lens with fixed focus.
Shutter speed is fixed at 1/125s and the aperture is controlled by a CdS exposure meter. It seems to switch between f/4 and f/8 according to the ISO setting (100 or 400) and available light. There is a built-in pop-up flash (hence the name) and an additional control to reduce the aperture when shooting close-ups with flash. The tripod bush is a nice bonus, along with the rather funky rewind lever which folds out.
I paid £4.82 for the black one, and £4.99 for the red. Both have corroded battery terminals and flaky light seals, but seem to work fine.
UPDATE, June 2010: I shot a roll with the red Pop over two days; one sunny, the other grey and miserable. The lens is not particularly sharp, except at about 4 feet, but it seems quite contrasty and resistant to flare. The camera is very simple to operate and feels nice and solid, while also being compact.
