I love to sing and play music. I can’t find anyone to get into a band with. All my friends are either in bands or talentless. So would it be a good idea to record the music and sing live with taped music. Would this be a good idea and is it common? Does it depend on the music?

The disadvantage of playing with a tape recorder or something like that is that it looks boring – only one person to look at it. You gotta be extra entertaining. Second is, for guitarists especially, is what are you going to do for rhythm? The two options i’ve seen are a drum machine or a laptop. The laptop is more expensive but you can literally record a full CD quality backing track. Unfortunately, the quality of your sound is completely dependent on house speakers… which could be a bad thing. The best way to go would be getting a rack setup, where you can plug your laptop into… but it would mean a mixer or preamp (virtualizer, perhaps), a power amp, and possibly other effects, too (EQ, compressor, vocal processor, etc).

A laptop also has no dynamic “feel”… you can’t give and take with a drum machine. This could mean that your music might feel lifeless and mechanical. Still, a laptop has a lot of options available to it.

If I had the money, that is what I would do…. as it is, i’m doing my best to talk my drummer in the band i’m in into doing a side project with me.

It would likely become a gneiss, because the clay content in igneous rocks is too small to produce things like slates or schists.

Music question by Andriy: Is it illegal to make music videos but without the actual music?
I am thinking about making creative music videos to put on my blog (that i intend to make money with). If I include the music (not mine) in the video then that would probably be copyright infringement. But what if I don’t include it and instead give people links to the music so that they can then play it themselves as background music? If this is still illegal, are there any legal loopholes? PS: I’ve heard of audioswap but it doesn’t have the music i want.

As long as you are not directly promoting any theft of the music and the link you provide goes to a reputable source you should be ok. HOWEVER…. If you are taking money from people to watch your video with ANY kind of “PROMOTION” of the music you would likely be in breach of copyright by familiarality. At the very least, the PRS and others would be on you like flies on a turd. I really wouldn’t do it.

It would be like someone trying to sell tickets for a concert where the tickets let you stand in a street half a mile away to listen.
